We did an experiment using yeast, warm water and sugar. The yeast was dormant (sleeping) in the sachet. When we added it to the warm sugary water, it woke up and started eating the sugar. After a little while, the yeast started to give off (burp) CO2 - carbon dioxide. This is what makes the bubbles in our bread dough, making the bread soft and fluffy.
